Multi Best in Show, Multi Best In Specialty Show Grand Champion Gold
Whiskybae Haslemere Habanera
Frederick C. Melville, Carla LaCoe and Jeanice Barton are pleased to present “Carmen” to the fancy on this week’s front cover.
The American Kennel Club states, “A solidly compact dog of vivid personality, the Scottish Terrier is an independent, confident companion of high spirits. Scotties have a dignified, almost-human character. Their terrier persistence has earned the breed the nickname “the Diehard.” The well-known Scottie silhouette is that of a short-legged but substantial terrier with distinctive furnishings at the beard, legs, and lower body. The wiry topcoat and soft, dense undercoat coat can be black, wheaten yellow, or a brindle-stripe pattern. Bright, piercing eyes, and erect ears and tail, convey keen alertness – a hallmark of Britain’s terrier breeds.”
“Carmen,” the USA’s #1 top-ranked Scottish Terrier and #2 ranked Terrier, is a beautiful example of breed type, and exemplifies the qualities of the Scottish Terrier, excelling in proper bone and substance in a compact package, layback of shoulder, a straight, crisp, and shiny coat, and a deep brisket with pronounced prosternum. Adding to these qualities, she possesses a level topline, powerful rear, a beautiful, clean head with small prick ears, and a bang-on carrot tail, all with a sparkling show temperament, which is difficult for breeders to achieve in a breed which can have wide type and size swings.
Carla LaCoe (Whiskybae) and Jeanice Barton (Haslemere) gave much thought to Carmen’s breeding, and selected their Japanese import stud dog, GCH. Land Rose R. JP All Good Things, ROMX (Yoshi), sire of 21 champions to date, to be bred to a lovely black bitch bred and owned by Carla and June Price (Brandybae), CH. Brandybae Bandanna (Roxy). From that breeding, three stellar quality puppies were produced, one being young Carmen.
Carmen exuded “star quality” as a youngster, growing up at home in Texas. Her owners saw that she had that something special about her. She debuted in the big ring by winning an important Terrier Group/Best in Show Puppy in Dallas, Texas under Mr. Scott Sommer during the Summer of 2016.
Then, at only 8 months of age, her owners decided to take this young puppy to the 2016 AKC National Specialty shows in Orlando, Florida. There, Carmen showed everyone what she was made of, winning Winners Bitch and Best of Winners for a 5-point major from the 6-9 months Puppy Class at the Tampa Bay Scottish Terrier Club Specialty under long-time Scottie breeder-judge, Mr. William DeVillenueve. As if this wasn’t enough, Carmen went on to compete in AKC National Specialty – Puppy of the Year competition that same afternoon. After a long day, assessing dozens of promising puppies in the competition, Judge Ms. Vicki Seiler-Cushman selected Carmen as her Best in Show Puppy of the Year! It was a breathtaking moment as Carmen was awarded a rosette three times her size, and television crews were on hand to photograph and interview this young Scottie sensation.
It has been a team effort showing Carmen, from the involvement of her breeders, Carla LaCoe (Whiskybae) and June Price (Brandybae) to Jeanice Barton (Haslemere), who owner-handled and conditioned young Carmen to her AKC championship, finishing her with another 5-point specialty major at the Heart of America Scottish Terrier Club Specialty under Judge Dr. Jerry Klein in Spring 2018.
Soon afterward, we were very excited to welcome Carmen’s new co-owner, Mr. Frederick C. Melville of Westpride Kennels, to Carmen’s team. Mr. Melville is no stranger to top winning terriers, having owned several Best in Show and Specialty winning Scotties and Westies over the years.
Also adding to Carmen’s team was her fantastic handler who would guide her specials career, none other than the highly-respected and talented Rebecca Cross, who has steered several Scotties, Westies, and other breeds, to incredible success during her tenure in the ring.
All that has gone into Carmen’s breeding, training, and show career has been based on a foundation of friendship, collaboration and teamwork. After all, showing dogs is not only about the thrilling wins but also about the friendships, memories, and good times.
Carmen was selectively campaigned in the USA after she finished her championship in May 2018, quickly rising to the top of the rankings, and finishing 2018 as the #2 Scottish Terrier all-systems.
The year 2019 really started off with a BANG. In January, Carmen won all four All-Breed Bests in Show in Puerto Rico under the FCI system, gaining multiple championships in the process.
Back on the mainland, she picked up five more All-Breed Bests in Shows in the USA, plus numerous terrier group wins – many, many thanks to the judges who awarded Bests in Show to Carmen: Mr. Jon R. Cole; Mr. Charles L. Olvis; Mr. Howard M. Yost; Mrs. Keke Kahn; and Mr. Eric Liebes. And to add to these accomplishments, Carmen won the biggest plum of them all.
